Once a year, millions of Minnesotans step out of their air conditioned homes to venture into the dusty outdoor furnace that is late August to congregate at the Minnesota State Fair. Driven by the promise of a deep fried oasis, carnival rides, and people watching, the Minnesota State Fair is a tradition for many Minnesotans, including Ben Nesvig. In Minnesota State Fair: Deep Fried Thoughts on Cheese Curds, Carnies, and the Human Condition, Ben Nesvig shares his stream of consciousness journey at the Minnesota State Fair with readers as he explores everything from deep fried cookie dough, the thrill of a giant yellow slide, and ultimately, what prompts Minnesotans to make the greasy pilgrimage. From the introduction: Like a moth to a flame and a Minnesotan to hot dish, I feel pulled here by something primal, something so innate it eludes conscious definition. Yes, I want cheese curds. Yes, I want a strawberry milkshake. Yes, I want to eat so much my belt files for unemployment and my pants become tights. I enjoy these indulgences, but I also enjoy spending an air conditioned evening at home with a ham sandwich and a good book. Why do I come to the State Fair every year without fail? Have I been enslaved by Lady Cheese Curd’s greasy golden seduction? While I get a thrill out of the food, I’d just be as comfortable eating a shameful amount of fried delicacies at a Chinese buffet without an audience of a hundred thousand strangers watching me wipe butter off my face. What exactly has led me to the State Fair over two dozen times since my birth? The unanswered question of why bothers me, like the last remaining ounce of a milkshake that refuses to be slurped into the straw. I need resolve.

About the Author As a young child, Ben Nesvig didn't talk much. Instead, he opted to create a running commentary in his head as the main source of entertainment. Those years of silent perception have sharpened his observational skills and given us the insights of a hyper-vigilant mind. From the topics of turkey bacon to public restrooms, Ben uses writing to delve into the minutiae of everyday life and expose the humor in it.

Anyone who has been to the Minnesota State Fair, or any State Fair for that matter, will enjoy the thoughts and observations in this book. As a former resident of Minnesota, this book brought back a lot of fond memories of roaming the State Fair every year. Even if you have never been to a State Fair or do not understand the hype of them, hearing observations about the interesting, and sometimes strange people who frequent them, will be open you up to a new world. I found myself laughing throughout the entire thing and would recommend it for anyone looking for an amusing read.

He uses his trip as a humor-paced trip of self-exploration, and many times during this short read, I was glad I was reading alone lest someone get annoyed at my cackling. It takes a little while to get into the book and his storytelling style, but it's worth pushing through - which, in the context of the length of this book, is only a few minutes of reading. It's a fun way to spend an hour or two and a great value for the price!

How can it be Thanksgiving already? I haven't gotten to the Minnesota State Fair yet."Well, Buddy Boy, I hate to break it to you, but the 2014 Minnesota State Fair is long gone and it took with it the slide-of-your-life ride, the display of grammy's dill pickles and her magic brownies--which were quite a hit this year, the carnies trying to guess your weight after you ate too many fried Twinkies on a stick. You missed the chickens-crossing-the-road races. Everything. Yep, you missed the whole darn thing. Before you sink into the depths of depression, Buddy Boy, thanks to Ben Nesvig and his book appropriately titled, " Minnesota State Fair" you're getting another chance. And not only that, but buying Ben's book will save you enough cashola that you'll be able to stuff your freezer with enough Butterballs for the next decade of Thanksgivings.Seeing the fair through Ben's words is just like being there. Even better because you don't have to find a place to park. The only thing it lacks is the smells--a fusion of animal dung, hot grease, and hardworking carnies. If it had the scratch and sniff feature, I'd give it six stars. BTW, happy Thanksgiving.
