"G. Henry Stege’s dedication to sailing was a natural development. Raised on the Connecticut shore of Long Island Sound, he followed a career in international marketing while sailing a series of boats from dinghies to several larger craft:a family cruiser named Starduster, then a successful one-ton ocean racing yacht named Stegosaurus, and finally a fifty-foot cutter named Stegosaurus II. After earning his Coast Guard Captain’s license and PADI Divemaster certification, he and his wife teamed up to operate Stegosaurus II as a charter yacht. Over a twelve year period they sailed more than 22,000 ocean miles commuting between Connecticut and the Virgin Islands, and approximately 4,000 miles running charters through the Virgins and various Windward Islands of the Caribbean.. His experiences formed the basis for two volumes of verse: Whistling in the Dark and Singing in the Sun, each of about 145 poems. They earned him the selfappointed title of Underwater Poet. Ashore following the sale of Stegosaurus II, he extrapolated his sailing life into two novels: Wings of Morning and Hurry Sunrise, following an earlier work, unrelated to the ocean, titled Season of the Fireflies. Sadly, Stegosaurus II was sunk by her new owner 200 miles south of Haiti during a singlehanded winter passage from Florida to Aruba. He survived. The boat did not."

By Blaine Parker Full disclosure: in the mid 1980s, when I was a yacht bum, I very briefly did some work for Bud Stege in the Caribbean. (I had no idea then that his full name is actually George Henry Stege.) Thirty years later, when I suddenly learned of this book of poetry, it came as a surprise. The amusing, generous, delightfully irascible white-haired charter boat captain I knew did not exhibit the outward demeanor of a poet. Well, it turns out: a poet he is. He’s a poet. A romantic. A cynic. A humorist. Not to mention a college classmate of Stephen Sondheim. (Who knew? And frankly, with this volume as evidence, Sondheim is in good company.) The verse herein is obviously the product of a life well lived. Yes, there are the obligatory allusions to Mr. Stege’s seagoing life. You can’t spend that much time in a small boat on the open ocean without being profoundly changed by it. (And just by the way, “professional yachting” is in no way the life of luxury one might assume it to be. Anyone who has spent time at sea for money will understand “Blue Water Skipper,” about those moments at the helm “when we make bargains silently with God.” They say there are no atheists in foxholes. There are also no atheists in the cockpit during a gale.) But this isn’t just a book of poetry about the sea. That’s only a part of it. It’s also about love and loss. About cultural shift and youth and growing old. Of family, friends and Beatles albums. Everything Mr. Stege writes here is accessible, enjoyable, readable and real. And ultimately, it’s just fun. It’s often easy to avoid poetry for the fear that it’s pretentious or impenetrable. Not here. Not this. This is what poetry should be: brief, user-friendly crystallizations of life as we know it. Good, quick reads over which one might decide to linger. Good fun. Good stuff. Yay, Bud.

A Beautifully Written Collection of Poems By MP Singing in the Sun is a beautifully written collection of poems.Woven together, they are the story of, and a glimpse into, one man’s life.Individually, each poem represents a rich personal memory, or musing of a man who has lived a full life. Some I identified with more than others but that did not bother me because collectively they made me pause and reflect on my own life as a whole. The book is a wonderful reminder in this technology-driven world we now live in that the beauty and richness of life comes from simple real life moments with loved ones.

All my life I have known him to be a great writer without an outlet. Now in his late 80s, he has finally published this brilliant collection of poems, many of them sonnets! These poems have touched me with their emotional flavor and beautiful choice of words. Anyone who is a fan of poetry should give this book a try, and make an old man happy. Please, if you are so inspired, also leave a review!
