She asked if I could give her a review when I was done. That was many months ago, so I hope she didn't give up on me.Part of the reason this took so long was because of how much I enjoyed it. "How could that be?" You may ask, "Why wouldn't you read it right up if you liked it?" Well, it was because I didn't want it to end. It was just so great.This is a collection of Julie's articles she put together in one book. I didn't realize this at first. All I knew was the title, and I thought the cover looked pretty great. After reading the first few segments, I thought, "Gee, this sounds like it should be a blog, not a book."Then I realized it basically was just that. I'd put it down and pick it up to treat myself to a few yummy tidbits of Julie's life. You see, she writes about herself; her thoughts, her experiences, her feelings. I felt like I was getting to know her slowly as the book unwound.I loved her honesty and thought process. She is forthright in her writing, and admits she's not always perfect, including her writing. She accepts many things about others, and hopes that they do the same for her. She treats people with the respect and kindness she would like to be treated with. If she's anything like her articles, we could definitely be friends.Many times I thought of my parents when I read her articles. I figured she must be around their generation. Yet I also related to her. She talked about things about her youth and past, but didn't make me, the reader feel lost being from a different time. She brought me right in with her. My dad has a knack for that as well, so I appreciated her story telling very much.Overall I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read tidbits. They are funny, fun, whimsical, kind, thoughtful and provoking at times. Well worth the read.

Turning each page, I thought, "Oh, how it was my favorite" but only to realize, I have picked many favorites. It is a perfect title "To the Heart" because it speaks to the heart. I am impressed with the word choices and emotions shared. This is one collection that can be read again and again.

It was a much simpler time when your biggest worries were whether you had enough to field a team and if you had the COOL jeans everyone was wearing and if you could get home before the street lights came on. Today's young people would be well schooled to learn of a time when your parents said "go out and play" and we did. Neil's trip in the way back machine reminds me not just of my youth but a time of safety, fun without electronics and using your imagination. Reruns were a bummer and you listened to Casey Kasem play the top songs of the week on an a.m. radio. His stories are heartwarming and funny an refreshingly honest. Grab a copy for your beach read and make sure your friends do, too. You won't be sorry.

Grelli If you grew up in the suburbs north of Baltimore in the 1950s and 1960s you will enjoy the stories that the author conveys.I grew up in the same area and reminisce as he describes many of the same places I frequented as a kid.

Thought-provoking By Andrea Walker Review of Absolute Silence by Ryn Holmes The title Absolute Silence captures the mood of Ryn Holmes’ collection of Haiku. The little book of fifty two pieces in the ancient Japanese form – one for each week? – is anything but silent, however. Each piece expresses its own emotion whether shouting with joy, whispering subtlety or crying with pain. The works vary widely in theme, some fulfilling the original ancient purpose of capturing a brief moment in the natural world. Lines like “trees wept silver tears,” for example, skillfully portray a snapshot in nature. Holmes astutely uses synesthesia in a “dark-smelling blue wind” and her concrete imagery throughout paints vivid pictures.None of the senses are ignored, and a variety of themes are explored from love, life, and death to marriage and parenthood with enough lust thrown in to raise the reader’s or eyebrows or invoke a chuckle. The book even addresses several social issues, making it overall a powerful collection.Although the poems can be read in one sitting, each haiku merits time for contemplation, whether pondering the situation or scene that inspired the piece, identifying with a similar feeling, or resting in the beauty of it. Ryn is a thoughtful writer who has a unique ability to evoke tranquil moods that will find you in many self-reflective moments. I was not familiar with the genre before I discovered this book and the structure of Haiku suggests that it is hard to do. A writer with wit and humor who provides insights on the way we look or should look at our lives.

By Amazon Customer Pride and Prejudice, my favorite book of all time and one of the most beloved books in English literature, just got a hilarious makeover.I'm a hardcore Austen fan who has probably seen the 1995 P&P adaptation about fifty times. But it is clear that Dr. Josten's passion for the work far exceeds mine. His annotated version of Pride and Prejudice shows how extreme, and how funny, some obsessive Janites can be.Ever since Colin Firth emerged from that fateful lake in his white linen shirt, the Austen world has never been the same. Blaine Josten is this fandom personified; a hopeless romantic and devourer of fanfic who nevertheless protests his deeply academic interest in the subject.A clever parody of the world of Jane Austen fandom, Blaine Josten's Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice will make true Janeites laugh out loud.

Marsella Pride and Prejudice is a favorite book - in my top ten list - and I own several unusual take-offs of it, including "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," (weird, but interesting) the PD James mystery "Death Comes to Pemberly," (workmanlike) and "Georgina Darcy's Diary," (haven't read this one yet.)Here's another one, "Blaine Josten's Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice." Aims to be funny, but is essentially the full text of Austen's novel with (relatively few) inserted snide remarks. It's an interesting idea, I think there is room for a satire on this book, and I enjoyed reading P&P again, but the quality of the remarks pales badly next to Austen's original words. She is so observant, sly, satirical, and funny herself that it would take a comedic genius to add anything to that. A couple of the inserts were mildly amusing, but fundamentally not successful.Sorry, can't recommend.I obtained a free copy of this book in return for a review.

Start with the foreword and just enjoy yourself. You won't regret it! I would write more but now I want to go read it again. :>

Kato's Attack and Kill, by Masao Kato

About the Author Kato Masao was born in Fukuoka Japan on the 15th of March 1947. Kato joined Kitani Minoru's go dojo in 1959, In 1964 he became a shodan. In 1973 he was promoted to 8-dan. In 1967 he scored a magnificent tally of 37 wins to only 8 losses and set a record by becoming the first 4-dan to qualify for the Honinbo League. He won his first title by beating Otake in the first Gosei title in 1976. Kato went on to win 46 total titles, fourth most in Japan behind Cho Chikun, Sakata Eio and Kobayashi Koichi. At one point, Kato held four of the top 7 titles: Meijin, Oza, Judan and Gosei. Kato was elected president of the Nihon Ki-in and International Go Federation in early 2004. Under his lead, he eliminated the Oteai, instead introducing new rules to help deal with rank inflation that had occurred over the years. He also increased komi from 5.5 points to 6.5 points and shortened thinking time. Later in the year, Kato fell ill and was hospitalized. He underwent a successful operation on 10 December, but his condition worsened a few weeks later. Kato died on 30 December 2004.

By A Customer Kato's Attack and Kill offers the low-kyu player the insight of the feared professional who earned the name "The Killer." Many books discuss attacks and threats, but this one gives us explicit examples of actual kills, as well as the tesugi essential to effect them. Attack and Kill will help kyu-level players work toward Shodan and solidify their understanding of the balance of power, and will offer Dan-level players a discussion of a topic rarely mentioned elsewhere.The material is presented well, and the book is enjoyable to read.

By Janet Fauret In this fascinating book, we follow Maggie Garbarini’s story from her childhood in wartime Britain to her present life in California. The path she follows is full of twists and turns, the choices she is faced with are not simple and the decisions she takes bear witness to her courage, and very often to an inner conviction, the consequence of her psychic powers. I had never had much patience with ‘psychics’ until I read this book. No, there’s nothing logical about it, hence my scepticism, but this lady, who hails from a Romany background, is convincing, despite the fact, or perhaps because, she doesn’t try to convince. Her ‘psychic work is not logical, it is intuitive but this doesn’t imply that life itself is illogical or chaotic. There is a pattern, but it’s usually beyond our grasp’. This extract set me pondering, and I ponder still.However, this is not a gypsy tale of predictions, crystal balls and cards. It is the down-to earth story of a fascinating lady and her determination to follow her dreams. Such is her personality that she makes friends wherever she goes, friends whose lives become closely intermingled with her own.I would love to meet her!

It is a story of a daring young woman who followed her heart, at times with a naive expectation that all will be well. It is a story of an innocent, talented young girl who was exposed to the life of "Travelers" yet protected by loyal family who sheltered her during her early life. Maggie left the protective home to study and be exposed to very interesting people in very interesting places. She reluctantly followed a life that was expected of young ladies way back when, and then when she instinctively knew her life was to take another path she bravely left the comfort of certainty and stepped out to a fascinating life and a fascinating career. Through all of this she faced many obstacles which proved to be the teaching tools she embraced with courage and faith and patience. The lessons she learned through her life's path gave me a blueprint for seeing how one is guided even in the face of uncertainty. I recommend this book for anyone who has doubts about following their heart.

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. A CLASSIC By A Customer I find it so sad that so few people have read or reviewed this masterpiece. I'm sorry to say it, but if it was on Christianity or the life of Christ the response would have been very different and this kind of writing would have been equated with the likes of "Paradise Lost." I am not a Buddhist, but I was deeply moved by the power and beauty of "Light of Asia." It follows the life of the Buddha, who was born in Dambadiva, India about 2500 years ago, to the royal family, but left the comforts of his life and all worldly possessions to persue the meaning of life; and gives us a vibrant picture of this great teacher and his teachings, rendered in beautiful verse. An excellent way to find out more about Buddhism.

17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Educational and inspiring By A Customer This is indeed a beautiful poem. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about the origins of Buddhism. The Light of Asia is Guaranteed to give the reader light. The actual reading is like a wonderful journey, unvieling a mystery but not explaining it. It left me with a very peaceful sense. Note: I came by this book when a girlfriend's grandmother passed away. It is the original hardbound edition containing dated notations by her grandmother in 1897. They were going to throw it away and not a person in the family wanted it. I will cherish this book forever.

55 of 57 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating Story Flawed by Errors & Lack of Citations By J. Jamakaya This book by Kevin Cook clarifies many misperceptions about the murder of Kitty Genovese but is flawed by errors and lack of citations. It's a fascinating case, and Cook writes in an easy-to-read style. I appreciate that he aims to correct falsehoods about the famous case but I was put off by several things.1) The Genovese case is controversial because of many misstatements of fact in the initial reports of the crime. It seems to me essential that in a book that claims to be a final corrective to these mistakes that the author include clear citations to interviews and documents. There are NO footnotes in this book. I know many folks don't read them, but that's no excuse for a major author and publishing company (Norton for heaven's sake!) to leave them out. In a one paragraph "Note on Sources," Cook says that he unearthed "thousands of pages" of new documents on the Genovese case. It is irresponsible and unprofessional not to cite these sources in more specificity. They are needed to prove the veracity of Cook's research and for future historians. Big fail here.2) Cook seems to speculate at times, making it hard to understand what was speculation and what was fact. Early on, for instance, he references the killer having drinks at a bar where the victim worked. Since this was never brought up again and he does not make clear if a witness told him this, I guess he was just speculating. I am a pretty careful reader, but there are other things like this that left me scratching my head.3) Even though the book is just over 200 pages, it is padded with lots of extraneous info about the context and culture of the early 1960s in America. Context is usually a good thing and this story benefits from some background on urban culture, race relations and gay life (the victim was a lesbian), but to go on for chapters about baseball players, Beatles' playlists and quotes from Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech was too much. I was impatient for him to get on to the Genovese story.4) There are many errors in the book that should have been caught by a fact-checker: the poet Audre Lorde's name is misspelled; George Gershwin did not write "Anything Goes"; "women's lib" could not have been cited as a factor in the 1964 Genovese case as the phrase "Women's Liberation" did not emerge until 1968. When I see errors like this, it makes me wonder about other facts in the book. Given the resources the author and publisher have, this book should have been much better.Finally, Cook gives New York Times editor Abe Rosenthal a free pass by failing to discuss the journalistic ethics of a misreported story that has haunted Americans and distorted our perceptions of crime for half a century.

A well researched book on what has become an urban legend By Travis Winston Churchill is alleged to have remarked "A lie gets half way around the world before the truth gets its pants on". I thought of that saying when it came down to the infamous Kitty Genovese murder of March 13, 1964. The name Kitty Genovese brings up images of neighbors hearing her screams while they pulled up a chair to their windows and watched the murder unfold as if they were watching a TV show. The New York Times infamously proclaimed that 38 of her neighbors saw her being murdered and ignored her cries for help. Nothing could be further from the truth. It turns out that there is a difference between an "eyewitness" (of which there were definitely only three) and “earwitness” who heard something but could not figure out what it was. Many thought it was a drunken spat (there was a bar on Austin Street where the first attack took place) and frankly many of the people who heard something were elderly people who were jolted out of a deep slumber at around 3:30 AM and could not hear the whole thinking correctly as it was a cold night with the windows shut tight. The author does very good research on Kitty Genovese’s short life and of the gay scene of early 1960’s New York City (Kitty was a lesbian and lived with her lover Mary Ann in the apartment in Kew Gardens near where the murder took place) as well as the NYC of the 1964 World’s Fair, and he delves into the character of the sociopath Winston Moseley, a middle class black man with a wife who worked as a nurse, two children, his own home, 5 dogs, a good job and a car - a man though with an inner demon that was dominated by necrophilia. That night Moseley set out to stalk murder and rape a woman and he did just that. It is interesting to contemplate that if the Times did not bring up the false story of 38 witnesses, Kitty Genovese would have been long forgotten.The book is short, well written and to the point – which I like.

Riveting non-fiction that reads like good crime fiction By Helen Recently when I was put in the unfortunate position of having to call the cops on my neighbor who was threatening his wife, it prompted a discussion amongst my relatives. Did I do the right thing? Should I have stayed out of it? My family was split but my cousin brought up Kitty Genovese.Why is she still a household name after so many decades? Kevin Cook examines this story which, all these years later, is still fascinating and relevant. This was not a simple case of dozens of witnesses knowingly ignoring a heinous crime. There were media angles, law enforcement angles, and a full cast of players beyond the residents of her building. Cook deftly weaves this story into a true crime page turner which sheds light on what exactly went on during that infamous night so long ago.

Back when I was younger, I used to always write poetry as a way to escape problems I had in my childhood, whether it be from the lack of friends, to the lack of attention from my family and my parent’s fighting. I am very happy that I bought it, I was laughing out loud. Some of those jokes are the story of my life...but funnier! Reminds me of the Jeff Foxworthy, "You might be a Redneck" jokes that I love so much. I see this is part 1 of a Book Series..cant wait for the Part 11.

It was like reading a web page or email with a bunch of funny photos on it, the kind that gets forwarded around or posted to Facebook. To charge money for this, it would need to be longer and have some proof reading. It made me smile though. I could see it as one of those short Christmas gift books you pick up while waiting in line at Barnes and Noble.
