Following the losses of both her father and husband during her 30s, Kate O'Neill digs through the experiences and explores many of the other feelings that the five commonly-known stages of grief don't cover, such as gratitude, moving forward, and creating meaning. Part memoir and part reflection on social norms surrounding death and grief, this book explores the opportunity for a fuller, more hopeful picture of life after loss.

We all will die at some time and most everyone will experience the loss of someone close. An amazing writer, speaker and marketing genius, Kate O'Neill has written an incredible book about surviving the death of a loved one. I put it on my Kindle early in the evening and once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down until I was done. While reading Surviving Death, I found my mind wandering to parallel situations in my life that had eerily similar features but fortunately different endings. While I have been incredibly lucky to not have to deal with the sudden loss of someone very close, I have had friends and family dealing with the death of people close to them and felt lost myself in how to help. I also have friends and family that I know I may lose some day and I'm not sure how I could go on without them. Her open and touching account of her very personal experiences will provide anyone with hope that they can get through such challenges themselves with love and grace. Thank you Kate for having the courage to write it and to share your story with the world. So many people can benefit from it and I hope that those that need it most discover this gem that is really about life, after death.

Kate's writings are always so insightful and her perspective always challenges me to think bigger and bolder. Her writing style always presents a page turner, that leaves me wanting for more.

Knowing that the partner chose to leave this world adds even more sorrow and questions to the mix. Through this experience and the experience of losing her Father previously, Kate tells of her resolve and struggles through the pain and grief she experienced - but more importantly, how she refused to let that pain define her or consume her. Rather, she chose at every opportunity a way to see the situation as a way for love to prevail, and as a way to grow even as the grief was so pervasive as to immobilize her. There are many, many "self help" books on the shelves today, and books about "positive thinking". This book is not full of trite, shallow phrases and methods to stay positive through grief. Kate fully acknowledges the grief she experienced, but made a conscious choice NOT to let it define who she was going to be moving forward. It isn't always easy, and sometimes friends and family don't make it any easier. But in the end, as Kate says, Love Wins.if you have lost a loved one recently or know someone who has, Kate's experience is worth sharing. She tackles the various thoughts around her loss with a reasoned, thoughtful approach that does not wallow in sentimentality or religious dogma. It is, first and foremost, a book about a human dealing with grief head on, in a very human way, and coming out on top again. For anyone struggling with these issues, Kate's book can be a great way to help someone see that grief can only consume you if you allow it, and that there is a choice.
