Teaching the Actor Craft is INVALUABLE - A MUST HAVE FOR TEACHERS AND WORKING ACTORS By AB There are many books on acting in my collection, but for teaching I don't rely on any as much as Jon Jory's 'Teaching the Actor Craft.' My first copy is already completely dog-eared, highlighted and marked up with exclamation points in the margins. The man is a master teacher and has distilled his long experience as a director and educator into a powerful and accessible progression of exercises that help actors sharpen the necessary skills to make manifest their imagination and reveal the text. The exercises come complete with well-crafted monologues and scenes to practice the techniques. Also, Jory suggests several possible progressions of the exercises for beginning or advanced craft classes of varying lengths, including a course structure for high school classes.TEACHING THE ACTOR CRAFT is as concise, practical, and insightful as Jory's previous books. There are other master teachers in the US, but Jory can write. Having studied with him personally, I am impressed by how clearly his voice and insight are captured in the book: no-nonsense, witty and perfectly paced for practical use. In my experience, technique is often left out of actor training. TEACHING THE ACTOR CRAFT addresses the gap brilliantly. I teach, coach and direct for a living, working with students and professionals, and this book is INDISPENSABLE.

He gives concrete, learnable skills that will greatly enhance the work of any actor, regardless of his or her experience level. Beginners will be dazzled (and relieved) to know that these are skills they can practice and learn. More experienced actors will be equally thrilled to see these techniques (many of which they may have been lucky enough to pick up intuitively over the years) clarified in such simple, understandable, actionable terms. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, teachers of acting must stand up and take notice of this book. Too many actor-training programs neglect to teach the practical skills Jory calls "Craft." I was fortunate enough to study the topics covered in this book with Jon Jory at The University of Washington. I can say without hesitation the pragmatic skills you learn in this book will serve you at every audition, regardless of the medium. They will continue to serve you when you book the job! As a teacher of acting, I cannot wait to implement this book in my next classroom. Bravo!

By adale TEACHING THE ACTOR CRAFT is an extensive road map of the external tricks of the acting trade with stops along the way to drop in at the internal work of character development.jory details the how-to of ‘craft’ in such an intelligent, delightful way one wants to get up and try all the examples, immediately.this excellent book solves a major mystery of the acting process. a long oral tradition of practice is put into words on the page. result? that which is often glossed over [or worse, ignored] is made plain.this is practical magic that professionals and newbies will find fun, useful and amazing. the exercises will get your creative juices flowing.you know the old theatre joke, right? you gotta do it, again, otherwise we’d call it “hearsal.” repetition? — oh, yeah. that’s the ticket.i am happy to give this book 5 helicopters [see page 56]!
