"Every country in the world loved the folklore of the West - the music, the dress, the excitement, everything that was associated with the opening of a new territory. It took everybody out of their own little world. The cowboy lasted a hundred years, created more songs and prose and poetry than any other folk figure. The closest thing was the Japanese samurai. Now, I wonder who'll continue it." - John Wayne
A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.
Hollywood has produced no shortage of famous movie stars, but none have been as culturally significant as John Wayne. Marion Morrison was born in a quintessentially quaint Midwestern town, but he eventually grew up to become John Wayne, the legend of the silver screen who embodied the Western frontier. Wayne starred in so many movies (nearly 150 in all) that when asked to name his worst, he joked that 50 of them were tied, but the excessive number allowed Wayne to portray heroes of all stripes, from cowboys to soldiers, and he was invariably charming, courageous, and full of rugged, masculine swagger.
Even as Westerns have certainly waned in popularity, Wayne himself has remained immensely popular, in part because he set the prototype for the heroic character, regardless of genre.

Great, Informative Booklet on John Wayne the Actor & the Right Wing White Supremacist By Bill Anderson This 67 page booklet is an excellent production. I learned a great deal about John Wayne that I either had forgotten, or had put out of mind very effectively. Maybe that's why I so enjoyed reading this.Firstly, even though he won only one Best Actor Academy Award, his movies earned a solid following because I, and so many others, looked up in awe, admiration, and a wistful pride that convinced us that the way to go through life was to boldly step out in front and, damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead.Sure, it was arrogant and somewhat naive, but we believed it because it was simple. And, right or wrong, simple will more often than not, win the day.As to his personal life, his failed marriages, well, I'm glad the booklet didn't spend too many pages on this aspect. The Duke's politics, especially his racist comments in his Playboy interview: I had never heard those before this booklet. I suppose I was serving Uncle Sam in the US Navy down in the Caribbean at the time. At any rate, I was at the time a McGovern pointy-headed liberal and would have disowned the Duke had I known he was such a redneck White Supremacist. I am especially grateful that the author did include Wayne's comments in this.Still, I thoroughly love a good shoot-'em-up so I will separate the radical right wing politician from the actor, and revel in Duke's portrayal of whomever he is supposed to be. It should be remembered, though, that Wayne was only slightly slower in shedding his antiquated racial prejudices. During the late sixties and early seventies, to be sure, most of us were still in denial regarding racism and prejudice. What I mean is that we can forgive our own failures only by forgiving the failures of others first.I would give American Legends: The life of John Wayne six stars if I could!
