I've have the good fortune to personally become acquainted with Bob Fergeson (photographer) By Jason Shimkos I've have the good fortune to personally become acquainted with Bob Fergeson (photographer), and he generously shares his wisdom with me and others who are sincerely looking for an answer to who they are. And one of the phrases that struck me during our converstions was that 'concepts are not carriers of life.' And with his photography, he captures and softly awakens the nostalgia or longing that we all have calling us. His photography in Images of Essence, coupled with Shawn Nevins heartfelt poetry that points to the great silence, is a means to stiring up that which is within all of us. This book makes for a good gift for a loved one, or as a personal companian to refer to as a way to stay connected on the path.

By Paul Schmidt “Images of Essence” is one of those singular books that come along once in a great while deserving of widespread recognition. I can’t think of any books in modern times in which masteful poetry, be it spiritual, religious, or secular, is coupled with masterful photography. Only in the medieval illuminated manuscripts can be found a parallel, in their loving care and patience used to express profound contemplation with text and illustration. Both Bob Fergeson and Shawn Nevins have each experienced a spiritual transformation, and this book is a precious lode of their new vision.Anthony De Mello said "The most painful act is the act of seeing. But in that act of seeing that love is born." These words and images compel us to receive Nature, Being, our inner Selves with a naked seeing. With reverence, with the beauty and feel of Love. The ‘pain’, at least for me, came from being exposed to a higher reality in contrast to a complicated and stunted existence The unveiling of a True Nature breathing its spirit into me, constricted most of the time. The great modern mystic, Joseph Sadony, described intuition as a special ‘feeling’ which came unbidden, followed by the endeavor of the imagination to interpret its meaning. This book epitomizes a similar process of revealment.Nevins’ poetry is of an unschooled poet who found his own voice; unselfconsciously expressing his discovery with not one word extra or less, as haiku or zen poetry do. His poems also have a Rumiesque quality in their surprising turnarounds and overlappings between concrete objects/events and sublime prayers. But there is less intoxication then Rumi, and more silence; the hush of eternity after the eye has been opened. The words serve as nudgings and cues, like those a blind man relies on as he steps along a crowded sidewalk. The grazing against strangers, reading the surface and space all around; all his working senses reaching to divine a clear passage.Fergeson’s nature photography is on the same level as an Ansel Adams, in quality and in how it transcends photography itself. His eye finds its reflection like a dowser, and extracts holy water from a landscape and its objects, one that is full and empty at the same time. Each photograph captures a beauty and truth between what is hidden and what is manifested. Of something beyond that has always been and will always be here and now. Conveying an intimacy found in the mutual gaze of lover and beloved, viewer and viewed.Nevins’ and Fergeson’s art glows with a preternatural light similar to that of dawn and twilight. They harvest the mediums of physical, transcendant and immanent nature; where nostalgia, praise and gratitude are born from an eternal home. They raise the question - Why would we ever want to go through life without clear eyes?W.H. Auden said, “A real book is not one we read, but one that reads us.” With this book, one should add, one that also sees us.
