By Grady Harp Gary Ludwig has been a firefighter/paramedic for 37 years and has worked in two of the most violent cities in the United States (St. Louis and Memphis) for 34 years of those years. He gathers his experiences in this field and presents an honest overview of his experiences with the emotions, feelings, sights, and gut-wrenching efforts men and women in this field experience to save a life or property. This is the insider look at a profession few of us fully appreciate: this book gains the field the respect that is due.One of the aspects that makes this book work so well is the fact that Gary is not a high-powered graduate of creative writing degrees. His mode of relating his years of experience is presented in a very real, honest and personal manner - we believe every word he writes, and that is a tribute to his courage both in his field and in presenting his memoirs to the public.Gary opens with his history as an eighteen-year-old newbie on his first call--to a high-rise housing project where a woman was about to give birth. "We had to walk up the stairs because all the elevators were broken. The dark concrete stairways with no lights smelled of stale urine in the summer heat as we made our way to the fifth floor." He describes the gritty details and raw emotions of his daily work as well as his role in historic events--crossing paths with visiting U.S. presidents and a pope.Terror, threatening situations, observing domestic violence, the impact of the drug cartels, witnessing suicides, and more are balanced with the camaraderie and humor of the off-terror hours at station. This book makes a fine read for everyone who wants to know what goes on once those blazing sirens (hopefully) pass by our homes. Grady Harp, April 15

Excellent read, Great Insight into EMS and the Fire Service By David S Becker Gary writes from a unique perspective of having a first hand look at those emergency calls that impact people's live in a dramatic way. This is a book filled with drama, compassion and a true understanding of EMS and the fire service. Not since "Report from Engine Company 82" have stories like these been told in such a realistic way. He also records a bit of history of the organizations he worked for by telling these stories. I know you will find this book entertaining and fun to read. While you may not understand the title of the book before you read it you will quickly come to understand why he choose that title. In the stories told are all the feelings associated with Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Prayers. As this is his first book of this kind I can only hope that it is the first of many more to come!

I personally have met the author who has assured me that he would sign my copy. I received Gary's book yesterday and decided to open it and start reading. By 10:30 last night I finished chapter 10 and put it down. I have never read a book cover-to-cover in over 30 years let alone read a book in one day! I have been in the fire and EMS profession for over 35 years as a sales representative and always have had a deep appreciation for what the women and men in this market do every day. This book for those who don't really know what these professionals go through will walk away with a deeper appreciation. When politicians try to reduce staff, close fire stations or cut pensions, I hope that they first read this book. A must read!!
