About the Author Aneko Yusagi was born in Kanagawa. After growing interested in reading and gaming, Aneko began to write novels. Aneko wrote The Rising of the Shield Hero and began posting it online. After updating the story daily, an unprecedented amount of readers became addicted to the rapid pace of the advancing story, and the novel became an online hit. It was first collected and published by Media Factory in Japan in August of 2013. Aneko Yusagi was recently quoted saying, “I will rise and find great success in life.”

Hilton I have already read this volume twice, the first volume I read 3 times, and I am still in awe of this story. It is not the same type of predictable light novel that many of us have come to expect and this in itself is extremely refreshing to see. While this story is listed as a harem type I would beg to differ at this point. While the main hero does have women, two at this point, by his side they are not unrealistically fawning over him and he is not unrealistically fawning over them. There is affection felt by the women towards the main character but not in the typical harem genre type sense.If you have followed the manga in Japanese as I have I will tell you that there is a lot more meat to the story than what the manga tells. I love this in that I am getting a more in depth look into the world that the author has created. This is why I have already read the entire volume twice!If I had to relate this to any other kind of story I would almost have to relate this to "Spice and Wolf". Don't worry there isn't a spoiler there so you can keep reading. In this story you have the mystical element, but you also get that real world kind of feel from it as well just like you had in "Spice and Wolf". You don't walk away with that "way over the top" type of after taste left from reading this story. It's pleasant, well paced and the character development so far is extraordinary. While this is still a fantasy in all respects, the real aspect is always kept in tune with everything else that is going on in the story.Again, I don't know how long they had to translate this from Japanese into English but yes there are a few typos. But never fear. They are minor enough that they will not detract from your reading enjoyment."The Rising of the Shield Hero" is a refreshing departure from most of the light novels and Japanese manga that I have become so accustomed to reading. It is truly and enjoyable story and one worth diving into for people both new to the genre of Japanese entertainment or the more experienced. Either way if you decide to give this story a try I can only hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.Now all I have to due is wait for volume 3 to be released!
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. My personal opinion By John Petty I love this series and the fact its the light novel version. The reason is because of the fact that there more detail as the manga glosses over alot of situations or skips some all together. If the manga is important try a manga reader app, but I strongly advise buying the light novels too so you get the full story. I have read both and can safely say they compliment each other. If you only want one version, then go with this one. Thanks for your time and hope I helped out.

There is just so much more character development, plot and action. As if Naofumi hasn't already completely wrapped himself around your heart already, he just keeps getting more and more likeable a character. That is not to say Naofumi is the only important character though; Raphtalia and Filo are also extremely likeable and unique characters who play irreplaceable parts in the story. Furthermore although there are now 2 females in his party, still NO HAREM. Yes, you've heard me: no harem. Naofumi sees both of his companions as his daughters, rather than love interests; he acts like a father figure as he protects and raises them. If you're looking for one of the most refreshing and interesting take on the genre to date, this series is the Holy Grail.The quality of the story definitely improved, but the publishing quality did not; it got worse, even. At several points in the volume, I seriously questioned whether One Peace Books proof read their translation at all: oddly phrased sentences saw a decrease while typos and mistakes saw an drastic increase. I'm usually lenient on small errors like these because they usually do not detract much from the story. However, in the case of this volume, sometimes the errors were bad enough to distort the meaning of entire sentences.But in the end, the shortcomings in quality checking could not overshadow the amazing story that Aneko Yusagi has woven. This series has grabbed me for good and will probably not let go for a long time to come, which is good, because I don't want it to let go either.
