Fun Send-up of Heaven and Hell, but Needs Editing By Alex I'm a sucker for a story that depicts Hell, the Devil, and to a lesser extent, Heaven and God...especially if the story has a comedic twist to it. Noland has crafted his own lore around some traditional Christian concepts that is different enough to be interesting but familiar enough to be palatable. It's a lighthearted story with a quirky sense of humor and an acceptably chilling villain and the climax feels like it's been ripped straight out of a blockbuster action film.I thought some of the jokes were a little oversold, but my only real problem was the lack of editing. Grammatical errors, spelling errors and shifting verb tenses pepper these pages, and it got pretty distracting after a while. The plot had sucked me in, which is why I kept reading, but too many of these issues broke my focus and disrupted my immersion in the story.Still, I'm interested to know what's next for Virgil, Marcus and all their friends. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I also enjoyed the relationship between the two protagonists as they team up with heaven and hell to hunt down a rogue demon bent on igniting a devastating angelic war that could wipe out mankind.It’s not easy writing humor, and approaching the spirit realm with a sense of humor is risky. Religious groups get so edgy these days. But the humor, while irreverent (to some) is also kind of down to earth funny, like Jesus sitting in his living room drinking Heineken with a couple of average dead guys. Or the chain smoking demon who curses like a sailor that is forced to “occupy” a girl scout to avoid discovery. Jesse Noland has created an interesting, lasting image of the afterlife. I applaud his effort and look forward to watching this young writer grow in his craft.
