The concept is fascinating: the fusion of two seeming polar opposites, film noir and the American western, to create a distinct sub-genre all its own. It was fun how the author approached the subject through specific directors and their representative films, too. While some of the westerns Meuel spotlights are familiar, many of them are brand new discoveries for me, which is another reason to read the book. Finally, the book gave me a greater appreciation for BOTH film noir and westerns. For those interested in either subject, this is a must-read.

By Julie Jervis Yet again, David has taken us deep into a fascinating era of cinematography that has set the stage for much of the film entertainment so very popular today. The Noir Western explores a much neglected yet important genre that combines the pioneering spirit of the frontier with the dark, gritty realities of psychologically damaged anti-heroes. In each chapter, David takes us through a film's story and it's context, interpreting meaning and providing an insightful backdrop around its creation. We walk with the characters as their stories unfold on the screen, and we meet the actors, the directors and others involved in each production, as the trail of the Noir Western unfolds before us. Essential reading for any film buff!

A new look at westerns By MSM This book will open your eyes to subtle influences you may have felt, but not consciously stated, as the writer leads you to revisit old favorites and other less familiar films. In an engaging and thoughtful voice, he brings sharp consideration to a wide variety of films that will have the reader making lists for future viewing. A fresh and compelling insight into the crossover of genres, great fun to read.
