Review "This is easily the best understanding of the hallmarks of Snyder's Batman run: Gotham as character and as contemporary urban center."--Popmatters"One of the best comic books I've read this year--perhaps the best... this is the Snyder and Capullo show. This is the work of two men at the top of their games. They have never been more confident in their storytelling."--New York Post"BATMAN: ZERO YEAR is well on its way to establishing itself as the new origin gospel in the New DC Universe."--Craveonline "Snyder and Capullo's vision of "Zero Year" feels large and compelling right off the bat, and it makes you want to read more. This is how I want all of my epics to begin."--Comic Book Resources "It's not just a great Batman story, but a great Bruce Wayne story."--MTV Geek

This is not the City of Owls. This is not Death of the Family, Zero Year, or Endgame either. Graveyard Shift is exactly what its name implies: it's down time. This is what a slow beat is like for Batman, and it's anything but. Between the huge arcs of Zero Year and Endgame, Batman must grieve the death of his son, meet new allies, and make new discoveries. In this book, you will find (synopses; no spoilers):• Bruce stops a bank robbery, escapes the Red Hood Gang on a Tron cycle, and confronts Gordon• Batman goes on a crime-fighting rampage, enters a mutant dog fight, and meets an incredible new sidekick• Bruce and Mr. Fox battle a newly-evolved Clayface impersonating Gothamites and committing crimes• Batman and Superman on patrol fight an ancient soul-eating monster• Batman breaks out of Arkham Asylum maximum security while facing an unstoppable old foe• Bruce tracks a serial killer who hunts Dr. Leslie Thompkins' patients, only to unearth more horrible truth• a glimpse of Gotham's future from upcoming issues of Batman EternalIt's not Volume 1, or 2, or 3, or 4, or 5, or 7, but make no mistake, this is just as dramatic, dark, twisted, insane, horrific, action-packed, well-written, and well-drawn a Batman book as its companions. It's just happens to not be one continuous story –more of a clipshow– and people are unused to that from Snyder & Capullo. But the boys are at the top of their game. Give this book an honest read and it will not disappoint you. In fact, I would easily rank it among the strongest Batman books in years, standing proudly beside Snyder's other volumes.

While quality of writing was generally fine, Art varied drastically and the "story arc" was non-existent. Instead, it was a mix and match game of whatever issues they could find to include between the events of the previous arc, and the next big thing. This includes a tie-in to Batman Eternal, and other assorted issues with little relation to the main Batman story. While most of the issues are probably worth a 4 star rating, the lack of coherence drops it to three.
40 of 52 people found the following review helpful. Frustrating and disjointed By Dirjel Junshin This was a really disappointing read. I bought into this "New 52" thing and decided I'd start reading the Batman comics, as I grew up on the Batman Animated Series and have been a pretty huge Batfan since, but have never read the comics regularly. The first five volumes were pretty good, but this one... if you aren't reading the other series (Batman & Robin, Batman Incorporated, etc), honestly, don't bother. The stories here are all either little non sequitors or completely incomprehensible stories that rely heavily on events that happened in some other book that I definitely have not read."New 52" was supposed to be a fresh start - a place for fans to get into the comic world without heavily relying on a deep understanding of a thousand other books that came before. Well, now we just need to read a thousand other books that are all coming out now - based on a quick scan of the Wikipedia page, there are at least 11 titles featuring Batman that are being published today, and there's no good way to tell what is and is not required reading.
