From marketing maven to angel of the garbage district—the inspiring authorized biography of Maggie Gobran, the “Mother Teresa of Egypt.”

Since 1997, Maggie Gobran and her organization Stephen’s Children have been changing lives in Cairo’s notorious zabala, or garbage slums. Her innovative, transformational work has garnered worldwide fame and multiple Nobel Prize nominations, but her full story has remained untold—until now.

Bestselling authors Martin Makary and Ellen Vaughn chronicle Mama Maggie’s surprising pilgrimage from privileged child to stylish businesswoman to college professor pondering God’s call to change. She answered that call by becoming the modest figure in white who daily navigates piles of stinking trash, bringing hope to the poorest of the poor. Smart and savvy, as tough as she is tender, Maggie Gobran is utterly surrendered to her mission to the “garbage people” who captured her heart.

At her request, the book also spotlights the people she serves—the men, women, and children who prove every day what a little bit of help and a lot of love can do.

By Nancy c I read this book cover to cover in one sitting because the story is so compelling. How one woman's heart can hold so much compassion and be so willing to give up all of her advantages and privileges in life to reach out to the poorest of the poor. She has truly found the way to true riches and we could all learn a lot from her example. What I really love is that the proceeds of the sale of this book are going to help the poor in the garbage dumps of Egypt. BUY THIS BOOK-you get a wonderfully told story, history of the ancient land of Egypt, the key to true fulfillment and you get to literally donate to help these people. WIN WIN WIN WIN Can't NOT buy it! Nancy-ABQ

A powerful story about servanthood By Lou Sabatier The world does not often understand what God values, but Mama Maggie does...love others first...servanthood. The quality which characterized the life of Jesus was servanthood. After reading this book I came away thinking that she is secure about her identity in Christ so she can totally focus on doing the work that God calls her to do. Mama Maggie's life story is beautiful and beautifully told in this book.

Meet the Need - Be the Change By Patricia Reding There was a time, not so long ago, when stories from out of the Mideast rarely made news in the West. Those days changed, likely forever, with the 9/11 attacks. It is likely that the world did not change on that date, but the average American’s view of it certainly seemed to do so. Today we find our news full of stories from that area—stories of death and destruction, of escape, and of terrorism. Mama Maggie, by Marty Makary also comes with some of the same news, but more importantly, it provides a story of a woman sacrificing for others, even in the face of all of those tragedies.Mama Maggie, born Maggie Gobran, is an Egyptian Coptic Christian. Having grown up in a well-to-do family, she nonetheless found her home and calling with the poor who live outside greater Cairo, in the waste from the city. Fifty thousand such residents pick up and sort the city’s trash, looking for anything that can be re-used, re-cycled, re-furbished—or all too often, simply eaten. Almost half of the children born there will die before the age of five—and all this within sight of a “modern” city. The woman in white, Mama Maggie, seeks God in unlikely places and brings Him to the suffering “garbage people” of Cairo and elsewhere. For years, she has encouraged people around the world to help her in her cause, becoming a sort of Mother Theresa to the area and for this age. She has provided food, built schools, provided medical care, and more. Her story will challenge readers and will open their eyes to the plight of a religious minority in a part of the world increasingly under attack from ideological/religious zealots.Notwithstanding the difficult lives I read about in Mama Maggie, I found Makary’s emphasis to mirror Mama Maggie’s own. That is, this is less a story of suffering and more one of hope, less one of the downtrodden and more one of the upwardly moving, less a tale of those in need, and more a chronicle of those, like Mama Maggie, who are meeting those needs, finding blessing in the process. Mama Maggie will lift your consciousness and leave you looking for your opportunity to meet the need.
